The Broody Hen Work and Community Program

At The Broody Hen, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, create, and belong.

Our Work & Community Program is a 2-day a week weekly summer opportunity where teens and adults —ages 14 and up — with disabilities come together and work through multiple stations to help care for animals, work in the garden, and prepare items for our weekly farm stand while building friendships, confidence, and practical life skills.

Participants work on real projects that support our farm stand — from caring for animals, collecting eggs, weeding gardens beds, making cookies and granola, to labeling and packaging products and creating handmade goods.

But more importantly, they are building community & purpose.

Participants may help with:

  • feeding and watering chickens

  • weeding and watering garden beds

  • harvesting fruits & vegetables

  • baking cookies and granola

  • Labeling farm stand products

  • Sorting and packaging seeds

  • Making handmade magnets or bracelets

  • Preparing baked goods like cookies or granola

  • Assembling farm stand gift items

  • Light farm stand preparation tasks

Every activity is designed to encourage teamwork, creativity, and accomplishment.

Who Can Participate?

Our Wednesday & Friday Summer Work & Community Program is designed for teens and adults ages 14 and up with disabilities who enjoy working with their hands and being part of a supportive community.

Participants should be able to:

  • follow and understand simple directions

  • stay with group - not wander or run away

  • understand basic safety rules

  • walk around the farm safely

  • work alongside others

  • enjoy hands-on activities

  • communicate needs (verbal, device, or gestures)

Interested participants will undergo a trial period the first week of our program so we can determine support level and ensure the program is a good fit.

The Broody Hen is a work and community program, not a drop-off care program. Participants must be able to participate safely in a group setting or attend with a support person.

Why This Program Matters

Many adults with disabilities experience isolation after graduating from school programs.

Our Farm Days Work &. Community Program provides a place where individuals can continue to grow, contribute, and build friendships.

The items created during these gatherings help support The Broody Hen Farm Stand while giving participants the pride of knowing their work matters.
